Sixty-five Walnut Ridge Middle School 8th graders visited BRTC on April 24th for a College/Career Day. Information about earning college credit/credentials in high school via concurrent credit and the BRTC Career & Technical Center was presented to the eighth graders.

Students went on a campus tour, visited The Bridge – a new space on campus that houses multiple simulators (CDL, welders, virtual headsets), experienced the esports arena, ate lunch at the BRTC Grill, and enjoyed the beautiful weather outside with some cornhole and whiffle ball.

Arkansas State University Assistant Professor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences Dr. Audrey Folsom speaks to BRTC CTC students about ASU鈥檚 clinical laboratory sciences program

91原创 Career and Technical Center (CTC) recently hosted Arkansas State University Assistant Professor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences Dr. Audrey Folsom as a guest speaker.

Folsom visited with the students about the clinical laboratory sciences program that includes both an Associate’s and Bachelor’s level degree.

鈥淢ost of the students were not aware of this career pathway, which is a step up from the Phlebotomy program many of them are currently enrolled in at BRTC,鈥� said Director of Career, Technical and Concurrent Education Darenda Kersey.

91原创 held a semester-long Esports Extravaganza contest.

In the Stage 4 finale, a tournament was held utilizing BRTC鈥檚 suite of PlayStations and Xboxes. Corresponding with their placing in stage 4, students were awarded $150, $50, and $25 in Black Hawk Bucks, redeemable at The Coffee Shop, The Black River Grill, and the BRTC Bookstore.

Placing first was Connor Murray. Second place went to Gracie Paschal. Third was Taylor Crosson.

During the spring semester, students were awarded points for logging visits to esports, and bonus points were awarded to first through third place in the PC and console tournaments. Gracie Paschal, a computer technology major, narrowly defeated Taylor Crosson with her second-place bonus points in stage 4, and has won a new PlayStation 5!

“I am thrilled to see our students enjoying their downtime and taking part in our extracurricular offerings on campus, said Director of Student Development Dane Dillion. 鈥淣ot only are they doing something they enjoy, there are many other benefits of playing video games that just happen to align with several of our general education outcomes: information literacy, critical thinking, and communication. Yes, at the most basic it’s play. But to be successful in the gaming arena, they have to build their skill, and this takes researching the latest techniques and practicing their implementation. They sometimes have to think very quickly about how to proceed in their game for a successful outcome (i.e. winning) and many of the games they play are in team mode, necessitating quick and efficient communication.”

Clayton Walters of Doniphan has been awarded the Cavenaugh Auto Group Scholarship made possible by funding from Cavenaugh Auto Group.

Walters is a 2022 graduate of Doniphan High School. He is the son of Cathe and the Late Dennis Walters. He is seeking a degree in automotive collision technology.

The Cavenaugh Auto Group Scholarship is an annual Proventus/BRTC Foundation Golf Tournament scholarship. Each scholarship is sponsored by a $1,000 donor who can name the scholarship. The Black River Technical College Foundation matches the $1,000 donation allowing students to be awarded $1,000 per semester, fall and spring, provided the student maintains enrollment and GPA requirements.

Greenbrier employees听 James Sweatt and Robert Brady have completed the AQI Six Sigma Black Belt certifications.

Six Sigma is a stringent process that deals with quality and statistics. They completed the Six Sigma Green Belt course last year and wanted to continue with their certifications to become CSSBB.

The certified Six Sigma Black Belt graduate is a professional who can explain Six Sigma philosophies and principles including supporting systems and tools. A Black Belt should demonstrate team leadership, understand team dynamics, and assign team members roles and responsibilities.

Black Belts have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the define, measure, analyze, improve, and control (DMAIC) model in accordance with Six Sigma principles. They have basic knowledge of lean enterprise concepts, can identify non-value-added elements and activities, and can use specific tools.

A Six Sigma Black Belt is a professional who is well-versed in the Lean Six Sigma Methodology, and who leads complex improvement projects, typically in a full-time capacity. A Lean Six Sigma Black Belt possesses a thorough understanding of all aspects of the Lean Six Sigma Method including a high level of competence in the subject matters contained within the phases of DMAIC as defined by the IASSC Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge. A Lean Six Sigma Black Belt understands how to implement, perform, interpret, and apply Lean Six Sigma at an advanced level of proficiency.

The opening prayer was given by Lakyn Phares.听 The class spokesperson was the class President Allison Dunivan. Heather Fletcher sang 鈥淕o Light Your World鈥� and the final benediction was given by Cade Nelson.

Awards were given out by the nursing faculty. Madison Mitchell was awarded three awards; Highest Average in Theory I, Theory II, and Theory III. The Florence Nightingale Award was awarded to Hannah Birdsong.

An Outstanding Preceptor award was given to Peyton Dale from the NEA Baptist ICU for being instrumental in the teaching of the RN students during clinicals.

91原创 held its Spring 2024 respiratory care graduation and pinning ceremony on Thursday, April 25 in the Randolph County Development Center.

91原创 celebrated the graduation of nine students who earned an Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Care. The class spokesperson was Class President Hannah Willbanks. A student-made slideshow was played showing highlights of the students’ journey through the respiratory program.

Awards were given out by the respiratory faculty. Bridget McNatt was awarded the Outstanding Academic Achievement award and Mary Lou Curtis was awarded the Outstanding Clinical Achievement award.

An Outstanding Preceptor award was given to Maddie McLaughlin at St. Bernard鈥檚 Medical Center for being instrumental in the teaching of respiratory students during clinicals. The graduation ended with the new graduates reading the respiratory care pledge.
